Building on 17 years experience as an engineering officer within the British Army I re-trained as a marine surveyor completing the highly respected Diploma in Yacht and Small Craft Surveying in 2008. This course is designed and accredited by the International Institute of Marine Surveying; an independent, non-political organisation which aims to advance the reputation of international marine surveying. I have an energetic, hardworking and cheerful personality combined with excellent communication and presentation skills.

Current Employment

Having left the Army in 2008 I founded White Hat Marine Surveying. The company surveys all types of vessel for pre-purchase, general condition, damage assessments, valuation inspections and system specific part surveys as required on yachts, motor boats, barges and canal boats.

White Hat Marine Surveying has also worked with Bowen Marine Surveys, specialists in the field of surveying vintage iron and steel barges, working boats and narrow boats.

Marine Experience

I have been a practising marine surveyor since 2008 and have surveyed a wide selection of vessels from 20’ wooden day boats up to 75m super yachts with plenty of wooden, GRP, aluminium, iron and steel hulls in between. My commissions have included pre-purchase surveys, damage surveys, insurance surveys, valuations, sea trials and operational risk management reviews. I have authored training material for Yacht and Small Craft Surveying and Ship Surveying Diplomas through the Maritime Training Academy and have delivered training and tutor support to students.

I have been an active sailor for 25 years and have cruised and raced a variety of dinghies and yachts in the UK, Europe, Baltic and Caribbean. In addition I developed my skills and qualifications in marine engineering in tandem with my professional development as a military engineer. I was recognised as a First Mate for the Armed Forces’ fleet of Nicholson 55 and Challenge 67 yachts and have 30 years experience of working with internal combustion engines and propulsion systems of various natures.
